Finance Management for SUU Ballroom Dance Club

Spring Semester 2018, Cedar City Utah

At the end of every school year, the Ballroom Dance Club at Southern Utah University takes a tour and performs at various events. Doing this provides an excellent opportunity for these students that they would not likely experience otherwise. These events are expensive, and because it isn’t a university-funded club, finances are very tight. I volunteered to help the club leaders plan, budget, and track everything for their end of year tour. As I provided these services, I showed these leaders how to better do this on their own for future tours and personal endeavors.

Seattle, Washington was selected as the place that the 2018 Ballroom Tour. Despite being closer than other options, you can imagine the many expenses associated with taking twenty people there for a week. Early in the semester, I met with the club presidency and director to set up a budget that would work within the company’s overall general funding. Every couple of weeks we would meet and discuss and update the budget as we found better solutions. As purchases were made, I kept track of them. During the next meeting, I would show everyone where the finances were and work with them to determine if plans needed to change. The many hours that went into this project with planning, budgeting, and tracking helped make this tour successful.

This project was used as my EDGE project for Southern Utah University. Each student who graduates from SUU must have completed an EDGE project. These projects help students gain an “edge” by giving them an opportunity to utilize the skills and lessons they have learned. When learning is put into action in this way, it’s roots are greatly strengthened.

Providing financial services for the Ballroom Dance Club at Southern Utah University was an incredible opportunity for me. I was able to use principles taught to me in various classes and be a leader to these other students. The lessons that both they and I learned will help us all be more successful.
